Summer Escapades

GULPORT– At the end of every school year, students begin to wrap-up their work inside of school and start to focus on upcoming activities for the summer. Nothing is more exhausting or frustrating than a school year. Numerous projects, homework assignments, classwork, group activities; it can really put a lot of stress on a student. That’s why when the summer rolls around students are thrilled to get out of school and do something that isn’t educational on a regular basis for the first time in months.

Summer vacation is basically a time where students can recuperate and gather themselves for the next school year. We are free to do what we want (well, unless you’re going to summer camp), since the beginning of August and it sure feels good to have that freedom. There is a window of opportunity a summer can provide for students. Volunteering, a summer job, relaxing, partying, vacation, the opportunities are endless. Usually a typical teenagers summer falls under one of the categories listed above, and sometimes a summer can just flat out stink (summer school).

Most of the time however, summer time is an exciting 2 months where you just let loose, and hang out with your friends. Everyday there is something new and exciting you could be doing. For some people, the summer isn’t all fun and games. For some, it’s a time to help the community and put in hard work and effort. Sophomore Gordon Moore works with his father during the summer to help people in need. “I also do landscaping and volunteer in odd jobs for the family,” Moore said. It may be a hard and tedious job, but it sure is rewarding in the end, knowing you did something productive with your summer.

While some students are turning to a job as their summer occupation, some are going towards the more “traditional” summer route and are just looking to have a good time. Essence Brown, a Junior (soon to be Senior) at BCHS, says her summer will be pretty simple. “I plan on working and having fun this summer,” Essence explained. Simple enough.

Some students are also taking vacations and getting out of Florida for a while. These aren’t your average tourist destinations either. These students are going to some very exotic places like Australia, Africa, England, and somebody even said that their family is going to Saudi Arabia for the summer. Many people just cannot stay in one place for a long period of time so they must travel whenever they can, so good for them.

This is the beauty of summer time. It’s a chance to roam freely and experience the world and all it has to offer. It is also an opportunity at bettering yourself as person, and helping others in the process. Most people see the summer as a time to party, hang out, and relax. While this may be true in some aspects,  summer is more than that. It’s a time to reflect on the past year, all the mistakes, all of the accomplishments, all of your friends, all of your enemies. A time to become wiser as a person, and enjoying yourself at the same time. On June 7, we are free.
