GULFPORT- The spring season sports begin for Boca Ciega High School. Students from all grades, boys and girls, try out for the sports: baseball, softball, tennis, track, and flag football. Coach Tim was assigned for the girls varsity softball team. The new coach is striving to build a better team. He has played and coached for baseball teams in the past so, he has experience playing on the field. A total of 32 girls tried out to make the varsity sport, but only 18 were chosen. The list was posted Friday January, 13 on Mr. Florio’s office door.
The candidates competed for their positions 2 hours a day for 3 days. Former teammates from prior years were surprised about the number of girls that came out for the team. Tryouts were held at Bear Creek playing field off of 1st Ave N and 58th St N. It is stated by the girls that the playing field is an easy place to get to because of its short distance from school. A softball field is expected to be built at the school in the middle of the season; if not, definitely by next year. With all the construction going on around campus, it appears that the field gives the players something to look forward to.
A wide-range of 8 returning players came to play for the 2012 softball team. There are 4 seniors on the team, with 3 that have already played on Bogie’s softball team previous to this season. Most of the returning players have played on travel teams or other leagues besides Boca Ciega’s. The team has a record of 11 wins and 6 loses in last year’s season, but the team is hoping to change those numbers. “We want to win all games, but our team goal is to win at least 85% of our games,” says player Brittany Price.
The Pirates had an overall batting average of .320. A total of 113 runs were scored by the team for the entire season. With seniors having the first pick, jerseys will be given out sometime before their first game starts on February 2nd against St. Petersburg High School. Senior Mallory Allen and pitcher of 4 years for the team had the best stats for the 2011 season. She had a total of 80 strike outs and 7 walks during the season. Mallory says, “Pitching is a big part of my life and my families also, they count on me to give my best at all times.”
Multiple fund raisers are predicted to be held by the team to raise money in order to enjoy the amusing activities they always participate in. The team hopes for friends, family, and staff to come out to the games. A game schedule is said to be posted on the Boca Ciega website soon. The team encourages people to come and support them as they aim for their goal and work together to better the team as a whole.
